I started learning the violin at three. I hated it, the sound of a violin was so very sickly. My parents wouldn't allow me to quit because they didn't believe a three year old should get to turn down such an amazing opportunity. For two years I was taught the violin and unwillingly practiced it every day, although I was quite eager to practice piano or dancing.
Then, one day when I was five, my new violin teacher realised that I didn't just hate the sound of my own playing, I also hated the sound of hers. It was then that I was introduced to the viola and I fell in love. The sound of the viola was rich, not strangled. I found it difficult to learn the new cleff but I worked very hard at it. The viola was everything that the violin wasn't, its sound was beautiful.
I found that I had an instrument that I was meant to play, just as I was also born to dance. Do any other musicians, dancers, or sporting types have a similar story? Share it.
